The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA, established in 1896, is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.

"Restaurants—with their open flames, hot equipment, electrical connections, cooking oils, cleaning chemicals and paper products—have all the ingredients for a fire to flame out of control. Nearly 8,000 eating and drinking establishments report a fire each year, according to 2006-2010 data tabulated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in Quincy, Mass. It is the mission of the Texas Restaurant Association to serve as the advocate in Texas and indispensable resource for the hospitality and foodservice industry.

The TRA's earliest records of the Greater Houston Restaurant Association operations date back nearly 70 years ago, when famed restaurant operator, Sonny Look, gathered fellow restaurant operators to discuss the issues Houston restaurant businesses faced. Today, the association's members gather and discuss pro business initiatives. The GHRA continues to thrive. Houston has more TRA members than any other local chapter. We continue to be a strong advocate for our members politically, as well as a resource for information, training and networking opportunities.
